When I first spoke to Joanie Crump, one of the organisers of the Hartlepool Folk Festival, and tentatively asked if I could somehow be involved, and hand out my booklets for the project, I was delighted to be told 'sounds good, see you there'. Being welcomed like this is exactly what a long distance illustrator (who sometimes suffers some loneliness) needs. So I spent two days in a tent outside, printing with folks in exchange for stories. Then enjoyed top notch music in the evenings. What more could I ask for? Well, I did ask for something extra. 'Could you introduce me to Martin Carthy when he gets here and chatted about all sorts. Which make me think, contrary to popular belief, meet your heroes if you get the chance. Mr Carthy was charm personified- folk history royalty. So here's a poster as a homage to the festival.
