Join us at the Museum of Hartlepool on Wednesday 24th September for an informal drop-in session to explore the exciting maritime volunteering opportunities available through the Maritime Skills Academy, part of the Tides of Change initiative.

Whether you’re curious about traditional boat building, heritage woodwork, maritime restoration and conservation, or research and documentation, there are a range of roles that might suit your interests and skills. Visit us any time between 10:30am – 16:30pm and get the chance to learn more about projects that you can be part of, such as:

🛥️ The Friarage Project:
Volunteers for this project will work alongside the expert restoration and conservation team at the North East Maritime Trust (NEMT), receiving hands-on training and guidance throughout the project. You’ll play a key role in restoring The Friarage, a historic coble fishing boat from the Museum of Hartlepool’s collection, which will eventually be proudly displayed alongside the PS Wingfield Castle. There is also a Documentation Volunteer position available – their role will be to document the restoration journey through photography, historical research, and the creation of engaging resources.

To learn more and apply for a Friarage Project Volunteer role, please email tidesofchange@hartlepool.gov.uk

⚓ The PS Wingfield Castle Conservation and Restoration Project:
Volunteers for this project will be able to gain practical experience in maritime heritage restoration by helping to clean and maintain mechanical and historical components of the PS Wingfield Castle. Volunteers can also support the conservation process by identifying historical items on board and creating a detailed inventory to guide restoration efforts. Additionally, there are opportunities to gather personal stories, testimonies and memories about the vessel which may contribute to future interpretation at the redeveloped Museum of Hartlepool.

These roles are perfect for anyone passionate about Hartlepool’s maritime heritage. No prior experience is needed – just enthusiasm, a friendly attitude, and a willingness to learn. Whether you’re retired and seeking a meaningful project, looking to connect with others, or exploring a future in maritime conservation or museum careers, this could be a great opportunity to get involved.

Come along for a chat, meet some of the team, and find out how you can get involved!

These volunteering opportunities are made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we’re proud to offer these exciting ways for the community to get involved in preserving and celebrating Hartlepool’s maritime heritage.
