Zawisza Czarny Mail Voice Shanty Choir
The choir have ventured to Hartlepool, from Gdynia in Poland, to commemorate the M/S Pilsudski, one of Poland’s largest troop carriers. She was sunk by the Germans during WW2 just off the coast of Hartlepool. The commanding officer, Capt. Mamert Stankiewicz, did not survive this tragedy and is in fact buried in West View Cemetery in Hartlepool.
Zawisza Czarny are the only sailing choir (or singing crew) in the world, promoting maritime traditions to the highest standard through singing authentic, traditional work songs the way they were performed on the decks of sailing ships from bygone days. They perform classical shanties, ceremonial songs, below-deck repertoire as well as contemporary songs from the maritime folk genre, which are performed in their original languages.

This was made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, visitors can enjoy this fantastic performance.
