On the 30th June, travelling all the way from Gdynia in Poland, the Zawisza Czarny Male Voice Shanty Choir will be docking in Hartlepool Marina and will be performing for one night only at the Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre.

Zawisza Czarny are the only sailing choir (or singing crew) in the world, promoting maritime traditions to the highest standard through singing authentic, traditional work songs the way they were performed on the decks of sailing ships from bygone days.

They perform classical shanties, ceremonial songs, below-deck repertoire as well as contemporary songs from the maritime folk genre, which are performed in their original languages. Every year, the group visit various ports all over Europe, performing concerts and commemorating important naval historical events. They have ventured to Hartlepool to commemorate the M/S Pilsudski, one of Poland’s largest troop carriers. She was sunk by the Germans during WW2 just off the coast of Hartlepool. The commanding officer, Capt.
Mamert Stankiewicz
, did not survive this tragedy and is in fact buried in West View Cemetery in Hartlepool.

The choir invite you to join them on the evening of the 30th to celebrate maritime traditions and enjoy some sea shanty fun! They will be joined by Infant Hercules, Teesside’s choir for men that brings voices from across the five boroughs together, who will also perform on the evening.

Doors open at 6:15pm – grab a drink and step into the shoes of a sailor for the evening as you experience the camaraderie of singing aboard ships of the past.
